God’s Little Children Preschool – Shrewsbury, MA | Preschool 2

Preschool II Program – Ages 4 to 6 Years Old God’s Little Children Preschool II (ages 4 to 5 years old) further develops your child’s knowledge and introduces skills that prepare your child for kindergarten. The program includes a wide range of academic topics that include reading readiness, language development, math readiness, science, social studies, art, music, and a gymnastics class once per week. Preschool II half day is offered MWF, T/Th or M-F 8:45am to 12:45pm. Parents may provide their child’s lunch or purchase a school meal plan. (Extended hours are available in the morning only.) Preschool II full day offers a variety of schedules between the hours of 7:30 – 6:00pm. Curriculum is the backbone of our program. Our curriculum is a strong, developmentally appropriate curriculum with enriching, interesting, and fun activities for every child. Each child learns at his/her own pace so all curriculum is adaptable to a variety of children. Curriculum/themes may change based on the children’s interests or needs. GLCP curriculum is based on the Massachusetts Department of Education frameworks and NAEYC criteria. If you have any questions or suggestions about curriculum please feel free to speak with your child’s teacher. Language Literacy Development The foundations for learning in the English language arts are critical to all other curriculum areas as well as to the child’s social and emotional development. Children develop the basis for verbal communication in the early childhood, beginning with nonverbal social exchanges. They begin to appreciate literature and the joy of reading by being read to in family and early childhood settings. A well-planned program will encourage children to learn about the world around them. Preschoolers are more likely to want to read and write when their imaginations have been regularly stimulated by being read to. Language and literacy is integrated into all centers and themes. Some key examples are daily reflection, webbing, V.I.P week, reading, dictation of stories, daily writing (inventive writing, names, menus, cards, signs etc., etc.), journals, word wall, phonemic (defined as: one of the smallest speech units, as the m of mat or the b of bat, that distinguish one word or utterance from another.) and phonological (syllables, words and sentences.) awareness, illation creating books, singing, finger plays, nursery rhymes, flannel boards, puppets, chalk boards, etc. Handwriting Without Tears (HWT) This is a Pre-K handwriting program that meets the needs of younger children. The Pre-K year is a year of preparation. But giving the children the same work that they will get in Kindergarten is not good. They simply aren’t ready, and there are other important things for them to be doing. This program is designed to prepare each child, but to do it in a playful way that is child-friendly and developmentally sound. Pre-K teachers are very sensitive to developmental differences, the early and late bloomers, younger and older children. The HWT Program follows a developmental sequence. This makes it easy for teachers to decide which activities to use and when to introduce new activities. This program fits right in with what good, developmentally based teachers have always believed and done. The program has exciting new materials and ways to help children develop readiness skills for kindergarten.
